PhD in Research

In India, a master’s degree is required to be admitted to a doctoral program, although the holders of a master’s degree are preferred. In some subjects, a Master’s degree in Philosophy (M.Phil) is a prerequisite for starting a PhD. Indian universities are required to establish criteria for the faculty to be recognized as a research supervisor for both the master’s and doctoral programs. Admissions are made through an entrance test at each university level. Upon successful completion of course work and research methodology, which will be an integral part of the doctoral program, the fellows will undertake research and produce a thesis project within a reasonable period of time, as stipulated by the relevant university. The final thesis produced by the PhD student and submitted to the University must be evaluated by at least two experts, one of whom must come from outside the State. It is up to the University concerned to have an examiner from outside the country. Upon receipt of the satisfactory evaluation report, the PhD student is subject to a viva voce examination which must be openly defended. The University must issue a provisional certificate certifying that the diploma has been issued in accordance with the provisions of this Regulation of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
